About this product

Without an encoder, a robot only knows what you told the motors to do, not what they actually did. This module fixes that. The 20-slot disc mounts on the free end of a BO motor shaft and spins through the IR slot sensor, which sends one clean digital pulse per slot to your microcontroller.

Count those pulses and you can measure wheel speed, hold two motors at matching RPM so the robot drives straight instead of curving, or make it travel an exact 50 centimetres and stop. It is also the standard starting point for teaching PID control and for tachometer, RPM meter and simple odometry projects.

The board runs on 3.3 V or 5 V and works with Arduino, ESP32, NodeMCU and Raspberry Pi. Use an interrupt pin so no pulses are missed at high speed. Buy two for a differential drive robot.
